The silk scarf - kadak is presented as a sign of reverence and special respect. The scarf is folded and presented with the front side facing up on open palms. This signifies the purity and openness of the presenter's intentions. It can be presented on any occasion.
Additionally, kadak are tied in sacred places on specially constructed "shelters" called Ova, or simply on trees. It is believed to be the dwelling of the spirits of the area.
Usually, people tie kadak when they come with a request to the spirit of the area or to express gratitude and respect. The kadak is an offering to the spirits; it is said that the more ribbons there are, the stronger the place, and when the wind sways the ribbon, the spirits listen to the prayers of the one who hung it.
